Police have begun training exercises for officers to use Taser guns during operations.

A tweet sent out by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Phairoosch read that the Taser guns will only be issued to officers who have undergone specific training on handling and use of the weapon.

He added that during this training, the participants will gain firsthand experience of the weapon.

A tweet sent out by Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed also stated that a trial for Police to utilize “Conducted Electric Weapon” has been commenced to increase the safety of the public and Police officers.

The weapon will be used only when force is necessary to ensure the safety of officers. How the weapon is used, will be monitored, said the Commissioner who added that the officers using the weapon will be required to equip a body camera.

A Taser gun also commonly known as a stun gun is a non-lethal defense weapon that can be used to incapacitate an attacker from a distance.
