President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Sunday, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to securing a happy future for children.
The President issued a short message via his official Twitter account to mark Children’s Day on Sunday afternoon.
In his message, the President noted that the Children’s Day this year comes with Maldives engaged in the battle to curb a community spread of COVD-19 within the country.
He said that while Maldives may be engaged in curbing the spread of the deadly disease, his government was committed not only to keeping children safe from the disease, but also to securing a happy future for them.
“As we battle COVID 19, I want to reaffirm our goal to keep our children safe not only from this disease but also secure a happy future for them by ensuring they have access to good nutrition, education, and protection from violence,” said the President.
790 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, including at least 20 children – one as young as seven months.
The virus outbreak has result in a drastic change in lifestyle with schools and offices closed and people confined to their homes.
Mental health experts have warned that these changes gave rise to mental health issues not just among adults, but also among children.
