MP Nasheed wants to obstruct allowances: MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called on Kulhudhuffushi Dhekunu MP Mohamed Nasheed to cease efforts to obstruct the provision of allowances and subsidies.

MDP said this in a press statement released today by eight members of its Parliamentary Group, against MP Nasheed.

Nasheed has said in his blog that subsidies and financial assistance should be governed by specific laws.

MDP has accused Nasheed of working with the pro-government 23-December Coalition to obstruct subsidies on fisheries and electricity, and allowances given to single parents and children, initiated by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government.

MDP has said that the current government is behind Nasheed’s efforts to obstruct the provision of these allowances, and that Nasheed was, in turn, behind the coup that toppled the previous government.

It also said that Nasheed is using these efforts as excuses to facilitate passing urgent bills.

The press statement is endorsed by Ibrahim Rasheed (Bondey), Mohamed Rasheed (Kubey), Ahmed Eesa, Mohamed Thorig, Mohamed Gasam, Mohamed Shifaz, Mohamed Nazim and Mohamed Rasheed.

Nasheed had stated in his blog that the Supreme Court decision that the amendments made to the Finance Act in 2010 are in line with the Constitution, should have resulted in the cease of provision of subsidies and allowances.

“I am fully aware of the consequences of what I am saying. I understand that such a move would result in the disruption of allowances being received by citizens. I also know the political rivalry and attacks that will follow this suggestion. Nonetheless, this is the result of us hiding from doing what needs to be done,” Nasheed had written in his blog.
