Imran refuses to meet Indian High Commissioner

President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdullah has refused Indian High Commissioner’s request to meet him.

This refusal comes at a time when the issues related to Indian company GMR have intensified.

Imran told Sun Online in an interview that the invitation to meet the Indian High Commissioner was received yesterday, and that he had replied that he is not able to meet “given the current circumstances”.

“It was not stated why he wanted to meet. For that reason and because of the GMR issue, we had to request to reschedule the meeting,” he said.

An official of Indian High Commission said that they had not yet received Imran’s reply.

Imran is one of the leaders of the movement “Maldivians’ airport to Maldivians”, recently commenced by coalition parties.

When asked if India has tried to intervene in the issue of GMR, Imran said that he does not wish to comment on that, but “would advise the Indian government to refrain from direct intervention”.

Imran said that the current problem is between a private company and the Maldivian government, and stressed that it should not lead to any problems between Maldives and India.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik said in a letter sent to political parties yesterday that the close relations between Maldives and India should be considered before taking any action against the agreement with GMR.

Earlier, a letter was leaked in which the Chairman of GMR, G M Rao had requested the Indian government to intervene to resolve the problems between GMR and the Maldivian government.

G M Rao and Directors of GMR are scheduled to arrive in Maldives tomorrow.

Imran said that a decision will be made tonight on whether the coalition should meet the GMR delegation.

He also informed that the coalition parties will announce its activities tomorrow, to reclaim the airport from GMR.
