Two new positive cases of Covid-19 in Maldives; total four

Health Protection Agency has announced two more positive cases of Covid-19 in the Maldives, bringing the total number of infected cases in the country up to four.

In a tweet, the agency announced that the two new cases were tested positive from the resort of Sandies Bathala in A.A Atoll. Three people were tested from the resort, out of which two results came back as positive. The remaining person was tested as negative.

The resort has been placed in lockdown after a suspected case was identified yesterday.

Kuredu Island Resort is also in a similar state of lockdown following two positive cases, the first to be identified in the Maldives.

Health Minister Abdulla Ameen announced that a total of 24 people were tested for the disease. A total of ten are in quarantine. From Kuredu, “contact tracing” was conducted on 80 people and a total of 97 people were placed in room isolation.

From Bathala, 11 are placed in room isolation, according to the authorities.

Hope for containment of disease in the Maldives

Minister Ameen stated in a news conference earlier last night, that the government had not given up the hope of containing the disease, despite the positive cases.

“We will not give up on the hope to contain the disease in the Maldives. We are trying to achieve the result of containing the disease. We have hope for that.” said the minister.

A person is Sh. Foakaidhoo, reportedly an employee of Kuredu, was also transported to the quarantine facility in Farukolhufushi yesterday after exhibiting symptoms. The person was identified following the contact tracing of Kuredu, according to the authorities.

Ameen also noted that the first two cases of the disease identified in the country were recovering.

President’s Office under-secretary Mabrook Azeez, speaking at the news conference last night stated that the government was fully focused on providing the right information as soon as possible. News conferences with media will be held every three days to update and a specially dedicated webpage on the ministry website is to be established for the purpose.

Status of the world

The fast-spreading disease which originated from China late last year has now spread to 104 countries. It has infected a total of 109,534 people. Recovery rates stand at 60,956, while the fatality rate is at 3,802.
