Dhiraagu Special Sports Festival to begin on Wednesday

Dhiraagu officials hold up the medal which will be awarded to participants of Dhiraagu Special Sports Festival 2019.

Dhiraagu has announced its Special Sports Festival for children with special needs will be held on Wednesday, October 23.

The festival will be held at the Henveyru stadium from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Manager - Corporate Social Responsibility of Dhiraagu, Bishara Hameed says the company aims to introduce the games held at the Special Olympics through its Special Sports Festival.

“I want to note that several participants of the Dhiraagu Special Sports Festival have represented Maldives at the international games in Special Olympics and have brought prestige to the nation with awards,” said Bishara.

Games which will be held in Dhiraagu Special Sports Festival 2019 include competitive running, boccia – a precision ball game introduced to the festival last year, and wheelchair running – a new game which will be introduced to the festival this year.

14 schools and four non-governmental organizations are taking part in the festival this year.

The first edition of Dhiraagu Sports Festival was held nine years back, with just 14 participants. The number of participants have increase with each edition of the festival. Over 400 special needs children will take part in the festival this year.
