The Parliament has voted to approve the former CEO of Raajje TV Hussain Fiyaz Moosa as the Information Commissioner.

72 MPs voted to approve Fiyaz to the post after the Committee for Independent Institutions forwarded three names out of the initial four approved by the President.

The three names proposed for the post were:

  • Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, Athamaage, Th. Vilufushi
  • Ahmed Fayaz Hassan, M. Hazaaryvilla
  • Ahmed Aahidh Rasheed, H. Guvara

MPs were asked to vote and the first name for the vote was the name of Fiyaz which gained the approval of all the MPs. This meant that a vote on the remaining names was redundant.

Hussain Fiyaz Moosa has worked in the media and journalism industry for several years. Ahmed Fayaz was a member of the Elections Commission previously and Ahmed Aahidh had previously worked for Transparency Maldives.

The Committee for Independent Institutions interviewed the three candidates for the post but refrained from revealing their scores. The first Information Commissioner Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abubakur was appointed on July 22, 2014. The post was vacated when the five-year term of the former Maavashu MP, Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abubakur lapsed on July 21.
