Historic Friday mosque closed for renovation

One of the oldest mosques in Male' city, the Friday Mosque has been closed abruptly for renovation purposes.

An Announcement by the Heritage Ministry today cited renovation works as the reason for the closure of the historic mosque. Media Director of Heritage Ministry, Ismail Naail Rasheed stated that the closure was in regards to the safety of the people who used the mosque.

The renovation of the Friday Mosque will be carried out with the aid of India. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi pledged India's support and assistance in the work during the PM's visit to the Maldives earlier this year.

The project which will be fully funded by India will be carried out by the Archeological Survey of India.
