Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has extended the application deadline for the vacant seat at the Supreme Court.

The application deadline which was originally set for noon this Sunday, has now been extended to noon on Thursday, September 5.

The seat at the top court had fallen vacant with the impeachment on former Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi on Wednesday, August 28.

Didi, who began his career as a judge in 1999, was impeached for nine violations of the code of ethics for judges.

JSC’s investigators found evidence he accepted bribes from former government officials suspected of embezzlement in exchange for biased rulings.

JSC is also in the process of appointing two more justices to the Supreme Court with the legislative amendment to the Judicature Act which increased the number of seats at the top court from five to seven justices.
