Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dhunya Maumoon has urged all countries in the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to remove Maldives from the agenda of CMAG.
Dhunya said at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry today that Maldives was included in CMAG’s agenda unjustly, and called for it to be removed immediately as the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) has now completed its investigation.
She expressed hope that his will be done at the teleconference by CMAG scheduled for 11 September.
Dhunya said that most countries had praised the CNI for its work, in their statements issued to note the release of the report by CNI.
She mentioned that statements by two countries are somewhat worrying, but did not indicate which two countries she was referring to.
She said that unless Maldives is removed from CMAG’s agenda, further concerns will be raised about Maldives remaining with the Commonwealth.
“From what I hear, there are several parties which do not wish for Maldives to remain in the Commonwealth,” Dhunya said.
She said that the reason behind this sentiment is that the Maldives was treated unjustly by the Commonwealth; and stressed that the Maldives will only collaborate with the Commonwealth’s future efforts to strengthen democracy, on the condition that the Maldives is removed from CMAG’s agenda, re-included as a CMAG member, and treated with respect by the Commonwealth.
