Voting underway to elect a lawyer to JSC membership

Voting has begun to elect a legal attorney to the membership of Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Voting began at 9 am this Saturday and is scheduled to close at 5 pm.

1,487 local legal attorneys are eligible to vote in the election.

Three ballot boxes are being used in the election; two in Male’ City and one in Addu City.

1,478 voters are registered to the ballot boxes in Male’ City, and nine are registered to the ballot box in Addu City.

There are six legal attorneys running for membership at JSC.

THE CONTENDERS:

  • Ali Rasheed, Kunnaaruge, Dh. Rinbudhoo
  • Abdul Maaniu Hussain, Anbareege, H. A. Ihavandhoo
  • Ahmed Nasheed Hussain, Dhafthar no. 1890
  • Abdul Azeez Jamal Abu Bakr, Maazee, L. Maavah
  • Mariyam Haneefa Khalid, Anbugasdhoshuge, H. A. Kelaa
  • Abdul Hannaan Ahmed, G. Asmahi, Male’

The position was previously filled by Latheefa Qasim who automatically lost her position with the enactment of the Legal Profession Act – which also led to the creation of the Bar Council on June 27.

All decisions regarding lawyers, including issuance of licenses and imposition of penalties is now within the mandate of the Bar Council.

The election this Saturday is organized by the Bar Council with technical assistance from Elections Commission (EC).
