The Audit Report of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) for 2011 has revealed that some CSC officials made trips abroad in a manner not entirely beneficial to the State.
The Report states that the President and Assistant Lecturer of the CSC travelled to Bangalore in 2011 to participate in the Asia Pacific Quality Network Conference from 1 to 5 March 2011, however, could not attend the conference due to unpaid fees.
Instead of returning home, they chose to spend five days in India for personal reasons, resulting in MVR42,852 being spent from the State budget.
Auditor General has recommended that this amount be returned to the State by the relevant officials.
The Report also notes that MVR259,722 was spent on sending 16 employees of the CSC abroad for a training which could have been obtained in Maldives. This decision was made after discussion between CSC members, however, it is not clear what policy the decision was based on.
As noted in previous years’ Audit Reports of CSC, State finances were used to pay the phone bills of CSC Officials in 2011 as well. MVR51,811 was spent on member’s phone bills in 2011.
The Auditor General has requested that this money also be returned to the State Revenue Fund.
Other issues highlighted in the report include the spending of MVR6,499 on a break-fast party at Aioli Restaurant during Ramadan.
