Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that the institution is well prepared for unrest in any region of the Maldives, which might follow the publication of the Commission of National Inquiry’s report (CNI) tomorrow.
Superintendent of Police Abdullah Nawaz told reporters at a press conference at Iskandar koshi today that information had been received of planned violence in relation to CNI’s report.
“Police have taken several steps in preparation, in light of the information received regarding organised violence in relation to CNI’s report. There will be groups tomorrow who are not satisfied with the findings of the CNI. At the same time, there will also be groups who celebrate CNI’s findings. Whatever the situation is, no one should attempt to create violence on the streets,” Nawaz said.
He said that the Police had completed the final exercises to ensure protection of public property, and that check points have been established on the roads.
He elaborated that over the past 24 hours, 99 people, 258 vehicles and 17 regions have been checked; while 184 people on the road have been stopped for questioning.
