Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member and Maafannu Dhekunu MP Ibrahim Rasheed (Bondaa) has submitted a case to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), alleging corruption in the provision of fifty flats in Hulhumale’ to some Officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
A statement on MDP website cites Bondaa and says that corruption does not always involve money, and that influencing decisions in order to deprive people of their rights also counts as corruption.
Bondaa accused ACC of not making any effort to stop people from carrying out such practices.
He also noted that even more flats are planned to be built for MNDF Officers, which would result in citizens being denied of rights guaranteed in the Constitution.
According to Bondaa, providing more flats to Police, Customs, and other Independent Institutions would be to misuse authority to deprive citizens of their rights.
Bondaa requested in the case presented to ACC and HRCM, that the flats be returned to citizens.
Defence Minister Nazim announced earlier this month the government’s plans to provide fifty flats in Hulhumale’ to MNDF Officers, following which a Committee has been formed to facilitate this.
