Ex-PG: Any discrepancy in Legal Profession Bill can be amended by committee

Any possible constitutional conflict in the Legal Profession Bill can be amended during the committee evaluation phase, says former Maldivian Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu.

Legal Profession Bill was submitted to the Parliament by the Maldivian government and is designed to lay the legislative framework for creation of a Bar Association and provide legal powers to the Bar Association.

The Bill was submitted to the Parliament on behalf of the government by North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.

Speaker of the Parliament and Leader of JP, Qasim Ibrahim has declared that several clauses of the Legal Professional Bill conflicted with the Maldivian Constitution, and has warned that no work on the Bill will be scheduled at the Parliament as long as the conflicts exist.

Former Maldivian Prosecutor General, Ahmed Muizzu has stepped in to voice his opinion on the matter.

In a tweet last Saturday night, Muizzu wrote that any possible constitutional conflict in the Bill can be amended during the committee evaluation phase at the Parliament.

He has urged the Parliament to resolve the issues and take a vote on the Bill as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, former Maldivian President and Leader of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed has accused Qasim of having a personal agenda in protesting against the Bill.

He has accused Qasim of creating havoc within the Parliament to serve his own personal agenda.

Legal Profession Bill remains stagnant at committee phase.
