Will decide soon whether to contest in Presidential Elections: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he will make a decision soon about contesting in the upcoming Presidential Elections.

The President made this statement in response to a question posed by a reporter, at the press conference held today as part of his current visit to Sri Lanka.

He said that he is contemplating this issue, and will make a decision “within the next few months”.

In response to a reporter’s question on if he would resign depending on the findings of the Commission of National Inquiry’s (CNI) in its report on 30 August, the President said that he is prepared to take all necessary action following the report.

He stressed that he assumed the post President because he was obliged to do so, as per the Constitution.

The President expressed confidence that the CNI’s report will not result in further violence in the Maldives, as the government is open to discussions in this regard.

He said that the government will facilitate an independent and fair election according to existing laws.
