President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has assured that no party will be allowed to create unrest in relation to the report to be published on Thursday by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), which was created by the President to investigate the transfer of power.
The President made this statement while speaking to reporters at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport prior to his departure to Sri Lanka this morning.
He said that ‘rumours’ are being spread in relation to CNI’s report, and urged all groups to refrain from creating violence.
“Unrest will not be tolerated. I am informed by law enforcement agencies that strict action will be taken against those who attempt to create violence,” he said.
He said that discussions will be held after the CNI publishes its report to decide what to do next, and stressed that the government had not made any decisions in this regard yet.
He said at the same time, that it is not likely that the CNI will state in its report that the former President resigned under duress.
The President also assured that the government will take the necessary action following the three reports published by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) last Monday.
He said that the relevant authorities will investigate matters which require investigation in relation to HRCM’s reports.
The three reports shared by HRCM are, its report on human rights violations during the unrest in Male’ on 6 and 7 February, its report on human rights violations during the unrest in Male’ and Addu City on 8 February, and the investigation report on the arrest and detention by MNDF of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
HRCM urged Maldives Police Service, Police Integrity Commission, and MNDF to take necessary action based on this information provided by HRCM.
