After being arrested yesterday upon her return to the country, the former member of the Judicial Service Commission, Aishath Velizinee,  has released from Police custody.

Velizinee was taken to consult a psychiatrist this morning and later admitted for treatment.

Maldives Police Service said that after the doctors advised treatment, Velizinee has been released from the Police custody and hand over to the family. However, the legal process will continue despite release according to the Police.

The arrest of Velizinee has been condemned by a number of politicians and members of the general public who argue she is mentally unfit and therefore needs to be released from police custody and provided with medical care.

Maldives Police Service issued a press release stating that the investigation is into a case involving statements made via her personal Facebook and Twitter accounts debasing the religion of Islam.

Police said Velizinee will receive all her constitutional and legal rights, which includes the right to medical care if required.
