Abdulla Shahid ends 25-year career as a parliamentarian

South Henveyru MP Abdulla Shahid has resigned from his post as a parliamentarian and ended a 25-year career at the Parliament which includes service as Speaker.

His last act as parliamentarian was to devise the successful dissolution of the highly contentious Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression Act.

Abdulla Shahid announced his resignation during a press conference held outside the Parliament after the vote on dissolution of the Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression Act this Wednesday afternoon.

Abdulla Shahid, whose public service includes Minister of Foreign Affairs during former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, said this Wednesday will be the last he will be seen at the Parliament.

He said he made the decision to resign from Parliament in order to serve in President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu)’s administration.

“As I have decided, after five terms at the Parliament, to step away from my seat at the Parliament and serve the people as a member of President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, this is my last day at the Parliament,” said Abdulla Shahid.

Though he has announced he will be part of President-elect Solih’s administration, he had not yet announced the role he will play at the administration.
