Former President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister. After Ranil Wickremesinghe’s sudden resigned from the position today.

Rakapaksa was sworn in after the main governing party, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) left the government coalition.

President Maithripala Sirisena’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe’s UPFA agreed to a coalition government after the Sri Lankan election in 2015.

Tension has existed between the two political parties for some time now. And the MPs of the SLFP has attempted a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister, Wickremesinghe. However the Prime Minister avoided the no confidence motion.
