The Interim Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Umar Naseer has said that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wants to take to the streets and create unrest in Male’ on the day the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) presents its report.
“MDP’s plan for that day isn’t to hold a peaceful meeting. They say that just to deceive the international community. What MDP is really planning is to take to the streets with all its supporters, and create unrest. They will set fire to buildings. Their purpose is to pressure the government,” Umar said.
He said that PPM will not be taken by surprise by MDP’s activities.
“MDP protested as intensely as they could on the day the President was supposed to address the Parliament at the Parliament opening session. They showed their ‘maximum’ level of protesting that day. There is nothing more they can do. No matter how much they protest, it is not enough for us or the government to be worried,” Umar said.
Umar said that regardless of CNI’s decision in its report, MDP will take to the streets, obstruct the Police, and torch vehicles; but all this is not enough to overthrow the current government.
MDP Steering Committee has planned a mass ‘meeting’ for the day the CNI publishes its report. MDP supporters from all over Maldives will arrive in Male’ to participate in this meeting. A date or venue for this meeting have not yet been announced.
