UN's Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs meets President Yameen

The Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the United Nations, Miroslav Jenča has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, today at the President’s Office. 

During the call, the President conveyed greetings and good wishes of the Government and the people of the Maldives to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and reiterated the firm commitment of the Government in maintaining its close engagement with UN. Speaking about the upcoming presidential election, the President conveyed assurances that the Government is actively taking all the necessary measures to ensure a free and fair election. 

The Assistant Secretary-General thanked the Government of Maldives for the invitation extended to visit the Maldives and praised the Government on the remarkable economic development achieved under the leadership of President Yameen. Noting with appreciation that he has deemed the country calm and peaceful during his visit, the Assistant Secretary-General expressed the readiness of the United Nations to work together with the Elections Commission of the Maldives in ensuring a free and fair election. 

Also in attendance at the call were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee, the Minister for Legal Affairs at the President’s Office, Uza. Aishath Azima Shakoor and the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, Mohamed Naseer.
