President’s Office spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has rejected the allegations made by former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, stating that the claims he attributed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu are false.
The Criminal Court on Tuesday found Shamaan guilty of three offences: accomplice to theft by extortion, misuse of authority for personal gain and money laundering.
Before attending the verdict hearing, Shamaan spoke to reporters and repeated allegations he had posted earlier on X. He claimed the Maldives Border Control (MBC) system was being “sold off” to certain individuals under the direction of Home Minister Ali Ihusaan, and alleged that he had been pressured over the matter. He further claimed that Attorney General Ahmed Usham was involved and that the President was aware of the situation.
In a post on X, Spokesperson Mundhu categorically denied the allegations, stating that the statements Shamaan attributed to the President were untrue.
Shamaan has now been convicted on all three charges.
His family had earlier alleged that he was arrested because he intended to expose corruption cases involving Minister Ihusaan, and that he possessed a video related to the matter. These claims have not been addressed by authorities.
