Presidential Election set for 23 September

The Elections Commission has announced that the 2018 Presidential Election will be help on 23 September. 

At the special ceremony held tonight to announce the date of the Presidential Election, the announcement was made by the representatives of the political parties in the country. 

The President of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef said that the day of the election is a Sunday and has requested the government to make it a special day for the election. 

 

Timeline for the Presidential Election 2018: 

  • Announcing the voter's list: 10 June 2018 
  • Inquiries regarding the voter's list: 10-20 June 2018
  • Candidate applications open: 15-27 July 2018 
  • Re-registration period: 17 July 2018 to 19 August 2018
  • Listing candidate order: 9 August 2018 

 

According to Article 110 of the Constitution, an election has to be announced 120 to 30 days before the term of the presidency ends. 

The Elections Commission said that ballot boxes will be placed at all the areas that housed ballot boxes in the past and the locations will be officially announced next month. 

While the exact date of the 2018 Presidential Election has been announced tonight, the MDP ticket for the election has been given to the former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently in self-exile in the UK, as the only candidate to take part in the MDP primary. However, the Elections Commission has said that the former President Nasheed cannot run in the election. 

Former Home Minister, Umaru Naseer, too, has announced that he would be running in the election as an independent candidate.
