Sentencing hearing in the case against Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed – accused of ordering the suspension of the Government e-Letter Management System at the Supreme Court on February 4 and February 5 – has been scheduled for coming Tuesday.

The State prosecution and the defense presented their closing arguments during the hearing at Criminal Court this Monday. Concluding Monday’s hearing, Judge Ahmed Hailam announced that a verdict will be issued on Tuesday.

Four witnesses testified on behalf of the prosecution and one witness testified on behalf of the defense during the trial.

Some of the State witnesses testified that Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed ordered the suspension of the GEMS.

The recent amendment to Judges Act by the People’s Majlis means Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed will lose his seat at the Supreme Court the moment he is convicted of a criminal offense.

Abdulla Saeed is also in the middle of two other trials at the Criminal Court.
