Donations to the State-initiated Rohingya Fund for Rohingya Muslims persecuted in Myamar have been handed over to the Bangladesh red Crescent, says Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad.

Total MVR 18.1 million (USD 1.17 million) was collected from the Rohingya Fund, set up the State in November, 2017.

MVR 12 million was collected from the telethon run by a committee set up by Ministry of Islamic Affairs and local media stations. The rest was collected from the charity match held in collaboration with the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Ziyad said the MVR 18.1 million was converted to USD and transferred to the bank account of Bangladesh Red Crescent last Wednesday.

He said the delay in transferring the donations was due to some administrative hurdles.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs stated earlier that it has requested the Bangladesh Red Crescent to spend the money on a sustainable project to help Rohingya Muslims staying in refugee camps in Bangladesh, such as housing.
