Ibrahim “Ibraa” Ismail, Political Advisor to the President, has again condemned the Justices of the Supreme Court, saying that “some seven guys in the Supreme Court shall not be allowed the chance to take this nation in their hands and throw it hither and thither”.

In a gathering of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held the previous night, Ibraa accused the Supreme Court of the Maldives of trying to undermine the supremacy of the Maldivian Constitution. “We have brought reform and changes to this country by our sacrifices, and we are not going to give some seven guys at the Supreme Court to just destroy those reforms and changes”.

“If the Supreme Court works to undermine justice in this country, and to undermine the supremacy of the Constitution, the people will go out, and we shall never stay put and allow that to happen”, said Ibraa.

In his speech, Ibraa called upon the people to go out there and voice their condemnation of the Supreme Court.

“The people today have an obligation to go out to give a helping hand to the Judges who have been assigned the task of establishing justice in this country. We have to go out there to do this. When I say this, the Supreme Court might issue another Press Release tomorrow. I am making this very clear, if another such Press Release comes out, I shall file another lawsuit. I will do that, and I will not stop”, said Ibraa, referring to the Statement issued by the Supreme Court weeks ago, following a similar speech he gave in a previous gathering of MDP.

After Ibraa’s speech at an MDP gathering at Thulusdhoo, the Supreme Court issued a Statement criticizing his comments, and Ibraa then filed a defamation case with the Civil Court, against the Supreme Court.

According to Article 141 (C), no person, whether in a public office or not, should in any way try to interfere with the works of judges, or try to exert any kind of influences on them in the distribution of justice.
