Committee approves Shareef for EC

The Committee on Independent Institutions of the People’s Majlis has approved Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation, Ahmed Shareef for the vacant seat at Elections Commission (EC).

The Committee on Independent Institutions issued its report on the decision approving Shareef for EC this Monday afternoon.

Shareef received 77.3 percent marks after interview by the Committee, 2.3 percent more than the 75 percent minimum requirement.

The Committee said in its report that it found Shareef suitable for the position, but did not specify the number of votes he got.

The Committee meeting held this Monday was attended by opposition lawmakers as well.

Shareef, who currently serves as MD of Fenaka Corporation previously also served as Secretary-General of EC.

 He served as MP for Thimarafushi constituency after winning a by-election during the last parliamentary term, but lost at re-elections in 2014.

 

 Application for EC membership was opened after the former President of EC, Ahmed Sulaiman resigned from his post in February.

 

 Ahmed Ali, the Secretary-General of EC also resigned from the commission in February.
