The resigned former President of Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Sulaiman, has applied to be a member of the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
At the parliament sitting today, the Chair read out two letters sent by the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The first letter is requesting a consult in appointed Sulaiman as a member of the NIC. The case was sent to the Committee on Independent Institutes.
After the applications for NIC was opened for a third time, seven candidates applied for the position. However, President Yameen sent only one name to the parliament.
Following the criticism the EC faced in declaring that a number of MPs had lost their parliamentarian seat for crossing the aisle, then President of the EC, Sulaiman resigned from the position on 31 January.
The law of NIC presides over the Maldives Police Service, Immigration, Correctional Service and the Customs Service.
Responsibilities of the NIC include investigating illegal activities by the employee of the above mention institutes along with looking into suspected behavior of the said employees.
At the five minute-long sitting of the parliament today, the name of the President's recommendation for the Maldivian Ambassador to Japan, Ibrahim Uwais, was sent to the National Security Committee for review.
