It’s uncertain whether the political turmoil of the past week is over with appeals being made for foreign intervention in Maldives, says President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Speaking at the gathering organized by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) last Tuesday night, President Yameen said he was uneasy with the appeal for foreign intervention.
"I'm still hearing invitations for foreign intervention, for sanctions against Maldives. I'm feeling uneasy over this," said President Yameen.
His comment comes after former President Mohamed Nasheed’s tweet on Tuesday, asking for India’s military presence in Maldives.
President Yameen said that some foreign states and institutions did not want to accept what actually took place in Maldives.
He said the period of service as the Head of State, in any politician’s career, was full of hardship.
“There isn’t honor or prestige attached to it. There isn’t any honor or prestige attached to the seat of presidency in Maldives, today,” said President Yameen.
The President, in his speech, criticized the actions of former Maldivian presidents. He said that the former US President (Barrack Obama) didn’t behave so “disgracefully”. He accused the former Maldivian presidents of being forever power hungry.
President Yameen said the State would not run after people to punish them for any more than they deserved.
