Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said that the actions of MPs during live broadcasts of Parliament sessions have adverse effects on the society, and also interfere with children’s rights.
HRCM issued a press statement today to voice concern over the indefinite suspension of the Parliament.
The statement says that some groups are taking advantage of the current political turmoil in the country, to deprive other groups of privacy and freedom.
HRCM noted with sadness that people attack one another physically and verbally in public places and in the presence of children; and urged all groups to refrain from such uncivilized behavior.
The statement also highlighted that the Parliament should play the biggest role in holding productive discussions on behalf of the citizens, to solve the serious problems currently faced by the Maldives.
“All Members of Parliament are advised to cooperate and work for the benefit of the nation, in order to facilitate harmonious collaboration of the three powers, and to establish a peaceful environment in the country as guaranteed by the Constitution.”
In addition to HRCM, the government has also condemned and expressed concern over the Parliament being suspended indefinitely. The government has stated that it will not cooperate in peace talks for as long as the Parliament is suspended.
