It has been decided that 23 July will be marked as ‘Police Memorial Day’ every year.
Speaking at the commemoration held in K. Kaashidhoo for the late Police Sergeant Adam Haleem, Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz said that memories of Police Officers who die in line of duty will be kept alive.
He said that a Police Officer who dies while on duty has sacrificed his life to serve the nation, and noted that every Police Officer should be prepared to face such an incident every day when they report to work.
Riyaz said that action will be taken against those who incite violence against the Police.
“Despite the crimes against the Police, we will not hesitate in fulfilling our responsibilities as obligated by the Constitution and the Police Act,” Riyaz said.
Riyaz said that the late Adam Haleem is the first Police Officer to be brutally murdered while on duty since the Police Act came into effect in 2008.
Prior to that, Lance Corporal Ali Nazim died in an accident at sea on 21 September 2006 while on a rescue mission. Also, Police Constable Yoosuf Zameel died in an accident while travelling from Male’ to Dhoonidhoo, on 13 March 2007.
At today’s commemoration, the late Police Sergeant Adam Haleem was awarded double promotion, the President’s Medal, and privileges to the family; which were accepted by Haleem’s father.
Mohamed Samah of Suvasa, Kaashidhoo, has confessed to killing Haleem, after being charged for the same by the State.
