Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group is more than capable of performing their duties as parliamentarians no matter what the harassment by the opposition at the People’s Majlis, says Majlis majority leader, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.
Nihan made the comment during this Monday’s Majlis sitting. He said he had no doubt both PPM parliamentarians and Speaker of Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed were more than capable of performing their duties no matter what the harassment.
“I want to give special thanks to you [Maseeh]… continued harassment without a speck of evidence, disruption by a group of people preventing the Majlis sitting from taking place,” said Nihan.
The criticism was directed at opposition parliamentarians, especially Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentarians, as Nihan presented the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol for the approval of the Majlis.
He said he condemned the protest led by MDP parliamentarians at the Majlis chamber as such an important vote was being carried out, especially as MDP parliamentarians’’ voices were the loudest when it came to advocating environmental causes.
“This proves they have done nothing expect for holding and underwater Cabinet meeting in the name of environmental protection,” said Nihan.
He said photos and videos of the MDP parliamentarians behaving so outrageously in the Majlis chamber should be shared with the international media.
28 parliamentarians voted to ratify the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
