Suspects in attempted murder of Mahfooz released from jail

All suspects charged with the stabbing and attempted murder of attorney Mahfooz Saeed have been released from jail.

“Sun” has been informed the Criminal Court rescinded its order to keep the defendants jailed pending outcome of the trial, and ordered their release last Sunday, October 29.

The case is still in the middle of trial.

The main suspect in the case is Ahmed Raid from Hulhumale’ flat no. 11270. He has been charged with attempted murder. Khalid Nafeeu from H. Sena and Firaz Jaufar from Male’ Dhaftar 6201 have been charged as accessories to attempted murder.

The fourth suspect in the case; Shafraz Ibrahim, 24, from Karankaage in R. Inguraidhoo is on the run. An Interpol red notice has been issued for his arrest. He is last known to be living in hiding in neighboring Sri Lanka.

Mahfooz was assaulted on September 4, 2016. He had a knife lodged two inches deep into the side of his head. The knife was removed after a three-hour surgery.

He was treated at both Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Sri Lanka.
