Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon – ordered to detention pending outcome of his bribery trial – has been transferred back to Maafushi Prison.
Faris was transferred back to Maafushi Prison this Saturday evening after he was transferred to house arrest on October 11 for maintenance work on his prison cell unit.
Information officer at Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman reported to “Sun” that Faris was transferred back to prison as the maintenance work on his cell unit was now complete.
Faris, the son of former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and key opposition political leader, is in the middle of two trials; bribery – for which he is jailed – and identity theft.
He is accused of offering a bribe to a fellow parliamentarian to turn a vote of no-confidence taken against the Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.
He is accused of identity theft for allegedly holding a press conference on behalf of Progressive Party of Maldives after he was kicked out of the party. A hearing in the identity theft trial is scheduled for 11:30 am, coming Sunday.
Meanwhile, leader of Adhaalath Party, Abdulla Imran – sentence to 12 years in prison for inciting violence – was also transferred back to Maafushi Prison from temporary house arrest earlier this Saturday.
