Former President Mohamed Nasheed has asked the opposition to agree upon a “transitional leader” who will compete against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the upcoming presidential election.
In an audio message to Maldivian Democratic Party’s national council members, Nasheed stressed the opposition needed to choose a transitional candidate who will reform the country’s judiciary and system of governance.
“The person elected in the presidential election in 2018 needs to be a transitional leader. The work of the leader should be all the work that needs to be done during the transitionary period. Especially, reforming the judiciary. And reforming the system of governance,” said Nasheed.
Nasheed’s audio message, which he sent from neighboring Sri Lanka, comes at a time of relative mull in the activities of the opposition.
He said a transitional leader was what was best for the country. And the best for presidential hopefuls in MDP.
Nasheed said the manifesto of the candidate which the opposition agrees upon should be to provide a “clean living” to the people of Maldives.
Nasheed proposed to choose the opposition candidate from a voters list compiled by allied opposition parties. He said the voters list can be open to the entire country.
“What I have shared is my view. We are sharing this view with our political allies, especially the allied political parties.”
