Maldives wins 4 votes, despite bowing out of running for UNHRC

Maldives won votes from four countries to be in the United Nations Human Rights Council this Tuesday, despite bowing out of running.

In a tweet by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government thanked the countries which showed support for Maldives.

Despite reports by some media sources that Maldives lost the bid for UNHRC, the government of Maldives had announced in July that it will not be running for the UNHRC.

Special Rapporteur to the UN, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed had commented at the time that the decision was made in light of concern expressed by some countries regarding the human rights status of the country.

The countries which won seats at the UNHRC from Asia are; Qatar, Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan.
