Speaking at a press conference regarding the death Nadheem Abdulrahman (Nadey), Haa Alifu Thakandhoo, Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Ahmed Shifan said that they would start putting tags on dangerous criminals starting tomorrow in an effort to stop the gang violence in Malé City.

Police said that they have sent the names of 16 people to the Home Ministry for the MoniCon tagging process. Suspects include those that are not in police custody even though they are suspected of crimes.

Superintendent Shifan said that restarting the MoniCon program is an important step to reduce violent crimes and bring peace to the city.

While the names of 16 people have been sent to the Home Ministry, it would be the Ministry that would decide whether they would be tagged or not. And the High Court would issue the order. MoniCon orders are issued the Anti-Terrorism law.

Those tagged under the MoniCon order are monitored via a system at the Police Headquarters and are restricted to house arrest at certain times of the day and specific areas of the city. They are also not allowed to leave the City without permission. Police would also gain access to monitor their personal lives and control their communication transactions.
