Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohamed Asim has departed to New York, to attend the High level segment of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This year’s Maldives delegation will be headed by Minister Asim.
As the head of delegation, Minister Asim will address at UNGA General Debate on 23rd September, addressing key areas of development in the Maldives. This year’s theme for the General Debate is: “Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”.
Maldives will host several side events at the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UNGA session. These include a meeting chaired by Minister Asim on Countering Violent Extremism: Promoting Community Level Prevention; a meeting chaired by Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim on Small Island Developing States responding to climate impacts and planning for sustainable future. Leadership, Innovation and Partnership; an event chaired by Minister of Gender and Family Ms. Aminath Zeneesha Shaheed Zaki on preventing violence against children; a side event chaired by Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Mohamed Shainee on Securing a Future for the Oceans: Leveraging Sustainable Fisheries for Conservation of Marine Resources.
Minister Asim and delegation will also hold several bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations of other UN Member States to discuss on Maldives candidature for the United Nations Security Council for the term 2019-2020 and other matters of importance to the Maldives.
Foreign Minister Asim will be joined by Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee, Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Gender and Family Ms. Aminath Zenysha Shaheed Zaki, Foreign Secretary Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Secretary Bilateral Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, and staff of the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the UN in New York.
