The charge against Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has been amended to “offering bribes”.
The change was confirmed to “Sun” by an official at Prosecutor General’s Office this Monday.
Faris was originally charged with distribution of bribes.
He is suspected of offering bribes to fellow parliamentarians to turn the no-confidence vote taken against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, in the opposition’s favor.
Spokesperson at Maldives Police Service, Ahmed Shifan stated in a press conference earlier that the authority had evidence Faris bribed fellow parliamentarians.
Faris has been in detention since his arrest on July 18.
The Police have searched his residence – Ma. Snow Rose in Male’ City – and confiscated the CCTV footage of the residence.
Faris has also been charged with identity theft. The case is in trial.
