The Maldivian government has established a special committee to help the Rohingya Muslims suffering in Myanmar.
Speaking at a press conference held at Dharubaaruge today to declare that the Maldivian people are with the Rohingya Muslims, Defence Minister, Adam Shareef said that the committee would support the efforts of the individuals and private organizations to help the Rohingya Muslims and provide clerical assistance.
Minister Shareef said that the committee would also make sure that the aid reaches the Rohingya people.
While the Defence Minister leads the state committee to help the Rohingya Muslims, the committee also includes the Minister for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad and officials from the Home Ministry, Gender Ministry and the National Disaster Management Center along with an official from the state media PSM.
Defence Minister Shareef said that they are working to open accounts at the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) to gather funds for the aid. He said that they are also working to establish a way to made donations via mobile.
At the event today, the Defence Minister said that different task forces have been established to help the Rohingya Muslims. And so a special telethon has been set from 21-23 September and a special task force has been put on the event as well.
Minister Shareef said that the opportunity is open for private citizens to gather funds through different social and economic events as well.
