U.S. Ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Atul Keshap has called the Maldivian parliament to ensure that the Majlis function freely in accordance with Maldivian law and Parliamentary procedures.
In a video statement made by the Ambassador today, he said that he events taking place in the parliament over the past few days are disturbing and unfortunate.
"I call upon the Government of Maldives to ensure that the Majlis function freely in accordance with Maldivian law and Parliamentary procedures." Ambassador Atul Keshap said.
He said that a free and fair Parliament governed by impartial rules is essential to the proper functioning of any healthy democracy and the United States will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Maldives.
Opposition MPs began protesting at the parliament after the no confidence motion against the Speaker, Abdulla Maseeh submitted with 45 signatures was deemed invalid.
