32-year-old inmate dies in Maafushi Prison

An inmate at the K. Maafushi Prison passed away this Thursday morning.

Media official at Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman identified the inmate as Ibrahim Asgar, 32, from M. Vaijeheyge in Male’ City.

“He was taken out of his cell yesterday evening after he fell ill. He died this morning under treatment at Maafushi Prison Medical Center,” said Lugman.

He said Asgar had been serving a 12-year prison sentence.

Six inmates died in prison for various reasons last year. Asgar’s death this Thursday brings the number of inmate deaths this year to two.
