The government has made the decision to name the new 25-story Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital as “Dharumavantha Hospital.”

Though the government has not yet officially revealed the name of the new complex, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his speech at the inauguration of Progressive Party of Maldives’ new hall – Rumaalu 2 – last Monday night, referred to the complex as

“Dharumavantha Hospital”.

President Yameen said construction of the new complex was going at full-speed.

“Dharumavantha Hospital will open in middle of next year,” said President Yameen, referring to IGMH’s new complex.

Meanwhile, leader of PPM’s parliamentary group, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik spoke of how the new complex came to be named “Dharumavantha Hospital.”

He said King Dharumavantha was a national hero, and that the name would become the country’s pride.

King Dharumavantha is known in Maldivian history as the King who converted Maldivians to Islam.
