The hearing in Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s bribery trial – scheduled for this Sunday – has been cancelled.
“Sun” has been informed the hearing was cancelled after Qasim was admitted at ADK Hospital this Sunday morning.
The hearing was scheduled for 10:30 am.
The last hearing in the trial was held last Thursday, August 3. Qasim’s attorney Hisaan Hassan reports the court is set to hear about the evidence in the case the next hearing.
Criminal Court has made the decision to hold closed hearings for the trial.
Speaking to press on Thursday, Qasim said the judge informed them the decision to hold closed hearings was made in light of death threats received by judges and staff working at Criminal Court.
Qasim was charged with bribery based on some statements he made during a gathering at JP headquarters in M. Kunooz. During the gathering, Qasim said he guaranteed tickets and assistance for the parliamentary elections in 2019 for all parliamentarians who left JP for Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
He has additional charges pressed against him, the trials of which are pending.
