CP: Supporting police work in best interest of the people

Supporting police in their work is in the best interest of the community and the best possible course of action, says Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Areef.

CP Areef made the remark in the statement he released in support of Police Constable Ali Razzan, who was injured in the recent operation to stop a shipment of contraband en route to Maafushi Prison.

Areef said it was the patriotic duty of police officers to protect the community from narcotics, gang violence and other crimes. He said that benefit from police work went to the community, and that police officers were children of the community – one family.

Areef said attacks on police officers had a history dating back to the beginning of political unrest in the country. He mentioned the police officer killed in K. Kaashidhoo in 2012.

“A similar tide has given rise once again. Instead of being grateful for the huge legal duty undertaken by police day and night to protect the people and their property, police officers are being singled out for grievous harm which is politically motivated,” said Areef in his statement.

He said every patriot should think about Constable Ali Razzan who was injured in the line of duty on August 5.

“Because criminals should not be able to grab on to and harm the hand raised in line of duty to stop crimes. The safety of the nation lies in opening the doors for the sacrifice and service of police officers, and welcoming it,” said Areef.

Areef also spoke about the string of violent gang attacks which took place in Male’ City the past week. He said the police were working on justice for the people who lost their lives and were injured in the attacks.

He said the cases were under investigation and that the police were taking necessary measures.

Areef also said the police will not back down from executing their duties.

“It is, therefore, without a doubt, in the best interest of every Maldivian citizen to support and aid police officers.”
