President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the 25-year-old Mohamed Anas killed inside the Litus service center was not killed because he was a member of a gang.
In his speech at the inauguration of the “Fehires” Neighbourhood Park and “Fahiveni” Community Center in Hulhumalé last night, the President said that Anas was killed by mistake when the assailants identified their target by the t-shirt he was wearing. President Yameen said that the government does not wish to see the society in ruin.
The President noted that instead of focusing on such dangers in our society and raising their voice against such things, the oppositions is always has their thinking in opposite to the government.
President Yameen said that the death sentence will be implemented in the Maldives and the government will not hesitate to do so.
The President also highlighted that while one group tries relentlessly at providing a quality life for the people, another is regrettably encouraging the destruction of this community. He further noted that despite some political leaders emphasizing the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, they did not practice in their affairs, what they preached.
Stating that the administration must be held accountable, the President said that doing so must result in the people's contentment. The President called upon all political leaders and scholars to set great examples for our youngsters and the youth. He also asked all leaders to reflect on what they could do for the people, as administrators of this country, and strengthen the bond with the citizens.
In a two-part ceremony, the President and the First Lady inaugurated the Fehires park, developed by HDC as part of its efforts in providing a quality lifestyle for residents of Hulhumalé, provides a playground, an outdoor gym, a volleyball court, a 3 on 3 basketball court, and a water pond.
The Fahiveni Community Center, aimed at catering to the needs of the youth, includes a badminton court, pool area, a cinema, a café, a gym, and a classroom.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the park tonight, the Managing Director of HDC, Mohamed Simon said that the park is part of the government's efforts to provide quality living by utilizing the empty lots in Hulhumalé.
Following the inaugurations, the President and First Lady took a tour of the park and the community center.
