A vote of no-confidence against Ahmed Abbas, the President of Kondé Council, has resulted in the termination of his presidency, after the remaining members decided that Abbas “had failed to discharge his obligations as President of the Council”.
A member of Kondé Council told Sun today that a motion of no-confidence against Abbas was filed on the 24th of February, and that the issue has dragged on for a long time as he refused to include the issue in the agenda of any meeting.
The same member also said that the issue was finally put on the agenda after filing a complaint with the Atoll Council, which ordered the issue to be brought on the table for the meeting held last Wednesday.
The member also said that Abbas did not attend the meeting on Thursday, and that the motion against him was passed when the Deputy President and the three remaining members of the Council all voted in favor of the motion.
The same member also informed that Abbas had, in addition to failing to perform his legal duties at the Council, represented his father in a court case filed by his father at Kondé Magistrate Court, against the Council itself.
Abbas was recently sentenced to 3 months in jail for contempt of Court by Kondé Magistrate Court. The sentence came after Abbas repeatedly refused to produce himself at Court as defendant in an action brought by the Prosecutor General for deception. However, the sentence was nullified by the Court, as per the Regulation on Contempt of Court, when Abbas apologized for his behavior.
