Two minors, under the age of 18, have been sentenced to imprisonment for a period more than 3 years, after they were convicted of theft of an outboard engine installed at a dingy in R. Hulhuduffaaru harbor.
Hulhudhuffaaru Magistrate Court’s judgment sentenced the two boys to be jailed for 3 years, 5 months and 10 days, on Tuesday last week.
According to the police, the boys were convicted of theft of a 25 horse-power engine during October last year.
The Police also said that the sentence has been moderated to home-detainment for the same period, in consideration of the fact that both the boys were minors and school-goers. The Police said that the decision was made after concerned authorities of the Government reviewed their case, and found out that it was best for them under the Government policy of redeeming juvenile offenders.
The moderation was then approved by the Court, obliging the parents of both the boys to watch over the boys carefully.
According to the police, the case was filed with the Maldives Police Service on the 31st of October last year, and it was sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office on the 31st of January this year.
