Lawyer Wadde remanded to 15 days in police custody

Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim (Lawyer Wadde) has been remanded to 15 days in police custody.

The remand hearing was held at Criminal Court this Tuesday.

He is suspected of being among those who broke through police lines and entering People’s Majlis premises on July 24.

The detention comes after Elections Commission announced Lawyer Wadde has lost his parliamentary seat after leaving Progressive Party of Maldives – with which’s support he won the seat.

EC has also announced the by-election for Thulusdhoo constituency.

The court order for his arrest read that Wadde was no longer considered a parliament member by People’s Majlis.

The security of People’s Majlis premises is maintained by Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF). But both MNDF officers and police officers were seen evicting individuals who entered the Majlis premises on July 24.

Police later issued a statement that they entered the Majlis premises when asked for assistance by MNDF to evict non-parliamentarians who entered the premises.
